The galaxy is a big place, but thanks to the science of 4X we know it’s susceptible to turn-based conquest through military, economic or cultural dominance. Being such a big place though it can’t help but feel a little… sterile.
Here’s a selection of Galactic Civilization III mods that should help add some extra spice to your space empire diet in the 23rd Century. We hope there’s a little something for everyone thanks to Stardock Games fully supporting mods and custom races.
Description: More backgrounds? More backgrounds!? More backgrounds.
This little mod includes over 30 new background images to delight our visual organs (eyes, I guess you’d call them) and they’re all concept artworks of a scientific nature, which means they’re space nerdy and a perfect fit for GalCiv 3. A must for Emperors.
Description: Technically this would be a modding tool but naming giant balls is too cool.
Adding in your own names for stars in GalCiv 3 isn’t as easy as the days of GalCiv 2, but thankfully someone decided to tame the wild XML beast responsible and has made it pretty darn easy to leave our own marks on the galaxy. Heck, these will be outliving whole civilizations. Naming rights is where real immortality lies.
Description: A planet with a natural power to inflame certain passions, at the cost of attention span. Not much time for work and high intellectual pursuits when there’s a certain something in the air everyone’s feeling. It includes a new type of planet, a planetary project and trade resource. What happens on Pleasure Planet stays on Pleasure Planet.
The following mods are part of a collection called Sotof’s GalCiv3 Mods:
Minor civilizations are weaker major civilizations
Description: What it says on the tin. The galaxies minor civilizations are no longer just a ‘minor’ but are actually transformed into major nations, except they start just as pitiful. Ideal for wanting a galaxy with a bit more variety in later power struggles, providing they survive the journey.
Description: Being able to terraform is no longer locked to certain colonies, but the trade-off is that initial projects have a reduced impact on the planet. It’s designed to ‘pace’ terraforming and allow for some whopper planets if invested in.
Description: The huge gets bigger in this little mod as the standard ‘huge’ map gets an upgrade from 200 hexes to 356 hexes. It’s a good compromise for those not wanting to venture out into a gigantic map of 512 hexes. This also lets us zoom out some more.
Description: End the tyranny of mining regulations by decreeing that mining ring upgrades become generic starbase modules. This will also let later mining modules be constructed together without preclusion. #MinersRights
Description: Take more time in the ‘peaceful stage’ of your civilization by using this mod. Now you’ll need to have researched 30 different techs before you advance onto the next Age. It’s applying the brakes for Emperor’s that prefer a Sunday drive to galactic empire building.
This ends the Sotof’s GalCiv3 Mods collection in our list.
Description: A whole new faction complete with its own unique tech tree? This stellar effort adds the Jia Kuja Anomi as a playable new race who possess inherit disadvantages at the start. They also get unique improvements, Starbase modules and custom ship designs.
Its creator is still rebalancing the Jia Kuja Anomi who are non-humanoid blob-like entities.
Alternative Star Map Backgrounds
Description: Feeling there’s a little too much ‘noise’ in the star map? The Big Bang was messy but thankfully there’s something we can do to tidy it up. This mod includes two new alternative star map backgrounds which either remove the nebulas entirely, or reduces them.
Galactic Civilizations 3 is still in its modding infancy right now but as those empires keep on expanding more and more mods are going to invade. We welcome our benevolent modification overlords and hope to see the Steam Workshop bursting within a year.
We’ll remain ever vigilant of new arrivals in this 4X soap opera of the stars.
