Bullfrog’s isometric sci-fi game ‘Syndicate’ could see the 21st century freshly wrapped. Game designer and industry heavy weight Peter Molyneux doesn’t hide his ambition that he ”would love to redo a version of Syndicate.”
No mention of other classics, like the tongue-in-cheek Dungeon Keeper, and he hasn’t even been sneaked a preview at EA’s rehash of Populous for the Nintendo DS.
”Syndicate was probably one of my favorites,” says Molyneux.
Many fans of the games and of Molyneux himself have always wished he revisit some of the franchises that helped shape the industry today. Dungeon Keeper is a keen favourite, with its unique casting of the player as an evil master of creatures looking to thwart and purge the goody-too-shoe heroes of the realm.
Populous was another landmark creation, playing as a shaman you lead your tribe to dominate all as you gun for godhood using the tribesmen and your powers to defeat rivals. When asked he did give hint that he would love to revisit some of his other classics too but Syndicate seems to be the front runner.
”One day, I’m sure that opportunity is going to come up and I’d love to do it,” Molyneux concluded.
Syndicate was one of the many properties that were acquired when Electronic Arts when they bought Bullfrog, making a possible revival a tricky situation unless Molyneux’s new Lionhead Studios, and his new Microsoft paymasters, come to some arrangement - somehow.
At least us Molyneux fans have Fable 2 and Lionhead’s secret AI ‘Dimitri’ project to look forward too.
