As promised, the closed beta for Scrolls is now active, open to gamers who preordered the game for $19.99 USD from the official site.
A post on the official site answered some of the questions by gamers about the game, including:

The second question was quickly answered “No”, with the further explanation that gamers ”can access all our content and play Scrolls competitively without using our secondary currency – shards. They’re completely optional.”
