Here’s a chance to check out space sim Star Citizen’s first-person shooter mode, which was demonstrated by developer Cloud Imperium Games at PAX Australia last Friday.
The ten minutes of footage shows off some currently rather rough but fairly promising near-future co-op action, complete with a zero-G mode.
Zero-G gameplay has players zooming around the combat zone, dodging bits of floating debris. Get knocked down and your teammates will have to drag you to a safe area for you to respawn. It will be interesting to see if RSI and Cloud Imperium can translate some of these neat ideas into a solid shooter - the gunplay looks a little clunky at the moment, but that’s only to be expected at such an early stage.
You can catch some more footage of Star Citizen’s FPS mode over on the game’s Twitch channel. Now the confusing business of sorting out when all these bits of Star Citizen will be released - Arena Commander 1.0 is coming later this year, while the FPS and Social modules, Arena Commander 2.0, singleplayer campaign Squadron 42’s first chapter, and the game’s persistent universe alpha will all be deployed nest year.
