Already in the hands of Kickstarter backers, Broken Age is coming to Steam on January 28. Act 1 will be included in the initial purchase, with Act 2 available as a free update when it’s ready to go.
With the game’s story featuring two characters, Double Fine have also released two videos featuring both in action. Vella is the boy trapped on a spaceship, played by Elijah Wood, while Masasa Moyo’s Vella is the young girl sensibly trying to avoid getting sacrificed to a sea monster.
Developers Double Fine decided to skip their original plan of releasing the game via Early Access, opting to go straight for a general release instead. ”For various logistical reasons,” reads a post on the game’s Kickstarter blog, ”and because we believe Act 1 is a polished and satisfying piece of content in its own right, Broken Age will be a standard Steam release that includes a ‘Season Pass’ granting access to Act 2 once it is complete. Anyone who has Act 1 — either by being a backer, or by buying the game separately — will receive Act 2 as a free update when it’s ready.”
Additionally, Double Fine have rescinded the planned embargo for Kickstarter backers with access to their game.
”Hey all, I just wanted to write and let you know that we have decided to go ahead and lift the embargo on Broken Age reviews,” reads a statement from the developers. ”The decision to set this originally was not made with any sort of malicious or controlling intent, but rather to keep spoilers to a minimum and give press time to enjoy the game, reflect on it, and write a review without feeling rushed to get it out first. However, it’s clear the excitement will be difficult to contain.”
