Dark Souls has taken the rotting dragon that is Games for Windows Live down to its final health bar, and is on the verge of moving entirely over to Steamworks.
From Software’s title has a bunch of new Steam achievements (though they’re locked right now), which suggests that the action RPG is about to make the final jump across to Valve’s retail platform.
FromSoft has been tight-lipped about any changes to Dark Souls’ online features, but publisher Bandai Namco told Joystiq earlier this year that they were looking at their options. A lot of the titles currently requiring a server switch aren’t hugely popular online, but since Dark Souls relies so heavily on its multiplayer element it’s not surprising that Bandai Namco felt they had to sort things out.
In fact, not having to rely on GFWL any more will probably improve things a great deal for anyone exploring Lordran. Which is ironic. Be aware that previous crossovers to Steamworks, such as the Batman: Arkham games, have suffered corrupted saves and other bugs. It might be worth backing up your saves with the handy DS Fix tool before you try to use them, just in case.
