Hideo and Kojima and Konami have unveiled the multiplayer component of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain in a live-stream on IGN, and it looks like a whole bunch of fun.
During the game you can equip, fortify and staff your own military base, but you can also invade those of other players to loot all their gear and capture their soldiers.
”In order to protect your resources,” Konami explains, ”You’ll have to gather staff, assign security patrols, develop security systems and invest in developing new platforms.” You’re essentially competing with other players for resources, trying to protect your own while grabbing as much as you can from everybody else. Check out the multiplayer portion of the demo at around the 17 minute mark.
The idea of building up your own defenses to ward off sneaky players? Awesome. The concept reminds me of the ‘Rat Covenant’ from Dark Souls 2, which let you defend a dungeon against intruders by setting off traps and summoning monsters. Of course, you can try and hunt down the sneak-thief too, but trapping him with gun drones, mines and security patrols sounds a bunch more fun.
Metal Gear Solid 5 was confirmed for PC at launch by Konami last week.
