In an interview with OXM (reported by GamesRadar), DICE executive producer Patrick Bach has confirmed that Star Wars Battlefront, much like previous entries in the franchise, won’t feature iron sight aiming.
”There are no ironsights in Star Wars, on the ordinary blasters,” Bach explained. ”You have scopes on some rifles, but there are no ironsights.”
It sounds like the decision is partly down to DICE wanting to differentiate Battlefront from its other games - removing iron sights goes some way toward disproving the claim that the game will just be Battlefield with a Star Wars skin.
”We’re not taking into account what we’ve done before, because I think that would be disrespectful to the fans, and to what we’re trying to achieve here,” Bach continues. ”A lot of the things you saw in the game have nothing to do with anything we’ve done before. Some features of course resemble (previous DICE shooters), because we want to make the best possible shooter, but in general we’ve tried to do something completely unique.”
I usually prefer being able to aim down the sight in FPS games, but considering Battlefront. also includes a third-person view and playable melee heroes, I’m not surprised DICE has gone down this route. Blaster rifles and pistols absolutely should have a very different feel from modern, realistic weapons, and removing iron sights may encourage a more movement-based, arcadey style of play. What do you guys think?
Star Wars Battlefront is set for release this November 17, on PC and consoles.
