Project Reality was a mod for Battlefield 2 that attempted to take some of the Michael Bay out of the game, focusing on Arma-style tense gunfights rather than action movie hi-jinks.
It was pretty good. Which is why it’s exciting to see the modders responsible join up to form a new team called Offworld Industries, and add their new project, the multiplayer shooter Squad, to Steam Greenlight.
The Unreal Engine 4-powered project is designed to put the emphasis on teamwork and communication, pitting teams of up to 50 players, separated into nine-man fire teams, against each other. As well as all the shooty-shooty action, there will be elements of ”base-building and interactive environments”, with fortifications and supply lines playing a key role in any successful strategy. So far the game’s reached over nine thousand votes on Greenlight.
”In less than 24 hours since launching Squad’s Greenlight campaign, we’ve received over 11,000 unique visits to this page, and over 9200 “Yes” votes to our game,” writes a member of Offworld. ”What is more astounding are the statistics, nearly 96% of you said that you wanted to see this game become a reality. It has given everyone involved with the project thus far an incredible boost in morale and drive to continue development!”
It’s good to see an independent team catering for the hardcore audience, and making solid use of the free (well, mostly, they do take a 5% cut from your sales) Unreal Engine 4. Check out the game’s website for a more detailed look at what to expect if the game is successfully voted through on Greenlight.
