The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset is going to cost a pretty penny, reportedly over $350, and will require a pretty powerful rig to run well. So, it only makes sense that a top notch game or two should be included with it to help defray the cost. CCP and Oculus have announced that the heavy hyped EVE Online spinoff, EVE: Valkyrie, will be bundled with the VR headset.
EVE: Valkyrie is a more WIng Commander style game than its MMO simulator counterpart, and the VR works well with flying around in three dimensions while evading both enemy fire and asteroids tumbling around in space. The game was first announced back in 2013 as a regular action spinoff. A few months later, Oculus and CCP jointly announced that the game would be an exclusive Oculus Rift title, so it’s not a surprise that they would now announce its bundling with the headset.
”EVE: Valkyrie is one of the most anticipated virtual reality games, and one of the first true VR games to go into development. It perfectly captures the promise of immersive gaming, shooting you into a sci-fi adventure as you pilot a spaceship in search of combat,” Oculus founder Palmer Luckey stated in the press release, ”Battling your friends (and enemies) in multiplayer space dogfights is the ultimate VR thrill, and we’re excited to partner with CCP to bring this experience to Rift owners everywhere.”
A new alpha gameplay video was also released showing off what to expect in the game. The video would probably be even more impressive wearing the VR headset, but it’s pretty cool on its own in 2D.
