It was about a month ago that Gun Media rolled out their Kickstarter with the intention of creating a Friday the 13th game that doesn’t notoriously suck. Fast forwarding to November 11th today, the Kickstarter has finally reached its goal of over $700,000 and is now truly official.
This incarnation is a asymmetrical survivor game. One player will take on the role of the hockey mask-clad killer and several other players will take on the roles of camp counselors who must survive the night against Jason’s onslaught. A new update was made on the Kickstarter page, announcing that “Jason Voorhees is unleashed and stalking the grounds of Camp Crystal Lake.” You must be a backer to get anymore than that, but it asks for player help in “making the game an amazing reality.”
This game has had some solid backing from the beginning. Gun Media was able to secure rights and support from the director of the original Friday the 13th and holder of the franchise license, Sean S. Cunningham. Kane Hodder, who is best for playing Jason in four of the movies starting with Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood is actually doing the motion capture for Jason in the game. Other famous names include Harry Manfredini, who composed the score for the original Friday the 13th and Tom Savini, who is a horror visual effects legend with credentials including 1978’s Dawn of the Dead and 1985’s Day of the Dead
The Kickstarter will last up until Friday, November 13th (cheeky) and everything from here on out will benefit stretch goals that will allow the developers to include iconic environments and kills from the movies into the game. Recent met goals included addition of the station from Jason X as a playable environment and kills like the liquid nitrogen face smash from the same movie.
