Developer and indie label Team17 has announced that it’s signed up Minsk indie studio Weappy Studios’ police strategy game This is the Police for release on PC and other platforms.
You play police chief Jack Boyd, a cop on the verge of retirement who wants to earn a big score before he leaves his pots. Exactly how you do so is up to you.
For instance, you could accept kickbacks from the Mafia, skim from your yearly funds, bribe certain politicians and officials to turn a blind eye to your nefarious actions. You’ll have to deal with regular police work too, monitor key investigations, oversee the budget, hire new cops and so on. Plus deal with a busy-body media that’s watching your every move like a hawk. Main character Jack Boyd is voiced by Jon St. John, who you might know as the voice of Duke Nukem.
”Having seen what Team17 have already done for previous crowdfunded titles like The Escapists, Beyond Eyes and Sheltered they were an obvious partner,” said Ilya Yanovich, co-founder at Weappy Studio. Team 17 will be handling all marketing, PR and community interaction for the project, which leaves Weappy free to develop the game itself.
It’s worth pointing out that This is the Police hasn’t actually met its Kickstarter goal yet, with just over $18k raised from $25k goal with seven days left to go. Team 17 says they won’t be pumping their own money into the project, so it’s not quite clear what will happen if Weappy doesn’t raise enough through its crowd-funding campaign.
That said, there’s still a while left to go, and having an established indie label push your game can’t hurt.
