I think releasing sixteen pieces of free DLC for your game absolutely allows you to throw some shade at your rivals, so it’s nice to see CD Projekt RED sticking the boot in to DLC practices in the industry now that The Witcher 3’s free post-launch content cycle is complete.
“I’d like to extend my thanks to all the gamers who played our game and gave these DLCs a try. Nothing makes a developer happier than seeing gamers have fun with what they created,” writes company co-founder Marcin Iwiński. “I would really like to see such initiatives become an industry standard rather than an exception to the general rule, and I hope that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has set a good example.”
It certainly has. The final piece of DLC, a New Game Plus mode that allows you to start a fresh run-through of the sprawling fantasy RPG with all your previously earned skills and equipment intact, was released this week. Other free content included some nice, new quests, a few cosmetic options, and new armour sets. Nothing revolutionary, but absolutely the kind of thing that other developers and publishers would have charged for.
Now we’ll have to wait until October for our next adventure with Geralt, when expansion pack Heart of Stone is scheduled to drop. It’s the first of two hefty story campaigns, with another, Blood and Wine, expected sometime early next year.
