Originally released way back in 1988, Dark Future was a Games Workshop boardgame very much inspired by grimy post-apocalyptic movies like Mad Max and Death Race.
Development team Auroch Digital is coming back to this long-forgotten franchise with Dark Future: Blood Red States, an updated reboot of the boardgame with a focus on vehicular combat.
You’ll take command of a team of Sanctioned Ops drivers, basically bounty hunters hired to deal with the petrolhead gangs that roam the wastes of ‘The Big Empty’, the huge wastelands that stretch between the few cities that remain standing. You’ll build and develop a squad of elite mercenaries, and a garage of horrible death-machines to hit the road in.
”When the money is right,” the developers explain, ”the player’s Op team will roar into action, attacking gangcults on the roads of the Big Empty in exchange for bounty. That vital bounty then pays for upgrades from front-mounted HMGs to booking a driver into the clinic for a new set of bionic eyes to give them better aim in combat. As the strength of the Sanctioned Ops team grows, so does the bounty on offer and the danger of the missions.”
Aside from that, and the brief trailer below, there’s not a huge amount of information about how the game will actually work. We do know it’s coming this Winter ”to a digital platform near you”. More information as we get it.
