If Hidetaka Miyazaki has his way, Dark Souls III will be the last game of the series, as the lead developer of the game wants to move on from it, he revealed in an interview.
In short, he feels that additional sequels will just dilute the product. ”I don’t care about what type of president I will be in the future or how I’ll be remembered, I just believe that [moving on] is necessary in order for players to continue enjoying our games. We have to keep creating quality games and be aggressive about doing new things,” Miyazaki insisted.
Miyazaki went on to say that Dark Souls III was the perfect ending to the series. ”I don’t think it’d be the right choice to continue indefinitely creating Souls and Bloodborne games. I’m considering Dark Souls III to be the big closure on the series,” he opined. He then insisted he wasn’t speaking for himself, adding, ”That’s not just limited to me, but From Software and myself together want to aggressively make new things in the future.”
If there is a Dark Souls IV, then, it seems it’ll be by a developer other than From Software, or a spinoff developer much like 343 Industries is of Bungie.
Dark Souls III will be released sometime in April 2016 on PC and next-gen consoles.
