Metal Gear Solid 5 is out in just over a week, and judging by the review scores that are coming in today, it’s going to be quite the game. As long as you weren’t hoping to jump straight into its PVP-focused FOB mode, that is.
Gamespot reports that the mode is locked behind a paywall, and that players will need to pay real money for in-game MB Coins in order to access it.
More accurately, you’ll need to buy space to build a PVP-dedicated offshore platform - a big part of Metal Gear Solid 5 is the construction of Mother Base, a hub that you can return to between levels where Snake’s personal army resides. While it appears that you can build all the necessary singleplayer platforms without spending real money (thank the gods), you won’t have enough room to set up the FOB area without doing so. It should be noted that there’s no indication that this is also the case for MGS5’s traditional competitive multiplayer, which has been delayed until early 2016 on the PC version.
”…unfortunately we don’t have any official details to share at the moment regarding the microtransaction model for F.O.B.. I should have more information for you next week though as those details are still be solidified,” a Konami representative told Gamespot.
Review builds of Metal Gear Solid 5 haven’t fully opened up the game’s microtransaction elements, so until we know more it’s probably not worth speculating. The game drops on PCs and consoles this September 1.
