Following on from the confirmation of gross lizard-man Reptile earlier this week, developer NetherRealm has revealed the next addition to the Mortal Kombat X roster.
It’s only grumpy ninja Ermac, the man who started life as a mythical glitch in the very first game, and then blossomed into a full-blown regular.
Quick recap: the diagnostics screen of the first Mortal Kombat contained a macro titled “ermacs”, a contraction of the words “error macro” placed there by by series creator Ed Boon. Players discovered this after a chip upgrade moved this file into the actual, genuine hidden character Reptile’s folder, and began to speculate as to who this mysterious “Ermac” could possibly be.
After messing with the fans a few times, Boon and his team finally added Ermac as a real character in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, an upgraded version of the third game. They loved the mystique that had built up around Ermac too much not to add him to the roster.
Lore-wise Ermac is a powerful psychokinetic and former bodyguard for series baddie Shao Kahn. When we last saw him he was freed from Shao Kahn’s control, and teamed up with Liu Kang to kick evildoers in the head.
Mortal Kombat X is set for release this April 14 for PC and consoles.
