Preorders for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset will go live tomorrow, and Oculus has yet to give the price point of the device, but Kickstarter backers who pledged $275 or more in the initial crowdfunding run will be getting a consumer level Rift headset for free.
The original Kickstarter never promised a consumer Rift headset; only donations of $275 or more even received a dev kit version of the device. Backers under that amount only received such things as t-shirts and posters. When Oculus was purchased by Facebook, there was an outcry that backers helped make the company valuable enough for a multibillion dollar sale, and that they wouldn’t see a dime, despite the fact backing was only to help produce the VR headset and was not stock in the company.
The Oculus Rift will be bundled with two games to defray the unannounced cost, EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale. The price is rumored to be anywhere from $300-$700, though most believe the cost will be $350.
The project was originally launched back in August 2012, and raised $2,437,429.
