Seems like secrets are a little hard to keep with some video games these days. Between retailers and companies, it’s sometimes hard to tell what’s just a placeholder and what’s a bit of actual information that got out a little too soon. Such might be the case with 2K’s Mafia 3.
Recently, an image made its way over to IGN from a Best Buy store. The image showed a preorder card for Mafia 3 with a date of availability set at April 26, 2016. Might seem innocent enough, but the game has also shown up for preorder on GameStop’s website with the same date.
2K studios issued a statement on the matter, discrediting a concrete release date:
”Mafia III will release in calendar 2016 during Take-Two Interactive’s fiscal year 2017. No official release date has been announced at this time. It is common practice for retailers to list placeholder dates before an official release date has been announced due to the requirements of their operating systems.”
That said, it wouldn’t be the first time this year alone that a game had a release date before the publisher confirmed it. Not-so-exclusive Rise of the Tomb Raider had a similar situation occur in December and Blizzard may have done a similar thing with Overwatch when they released preorder marketing materials back in November. So we’ll just wait and see what happens with Mafia 3.
