The addition of co-op play in heavily single-player oriented experiences is always a source of debate among gamers. Does co-op bring down the rest of the product? Could the game have been better if time wasn’t spent on co-op? Ubisoft seems to think so in the case of Far Cry Primal. The game will be single-player only.
The decision was confirmed over on Far Cry Primal’s Steam page, where Community Manager Jason Paradise answered to the question of co-op in a community forum post. According to Paradise, the decision was made early on to keep the focus on single-player and not bother with worrying about how to implement co-op into the game.
”We are focusing entirely on creating the best possible Far Cry experience for our fans,” says Paradise. ”Bringing the Stone Age to life and providing players with a strong gameplay experience based off of the Far Cry legacy meant we had to reinvent our core gameplay loop. This was definitely not a small undertaking. Our focus was on delivering this fantasy which required clear priorities for the team. Therefore, in the early stages of the project, we made the difficult choice of focusing our efforts on the single player experience.”
It certainly won’t be a popular choice to some players who have had the multiplayer experience of Far Cry since its original incarnation, but it may be a boon to others who the company has taken a stance to deliver on what the game is supposed to do best. For someone like myself that enjoys a good single-player experience, I’m glad to see Ubisoft leave it out if it means delivering a better product.
Far Cry Primal will be coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on February 23, 2016.
