After being a part of the World of Warcraft development team since its original release before rising to the rank of Game Director in 2010, Tom Chilton says he's "for something different."
The sudden departure came as a surprise to many, with a number of key World of Warcraft staff moving away from the popular MMORPG since the release of the well received expansion Legion just last month. With some moving away from Blizzard entirely, Tom's decision to simply move to another project will likely cause a ruckus with its vague use of detail.
With Polygon getting word from a Blizzard representative that "Everything we’re ready to share is in [Chilton’s] post itself,", it begs the question of why they'd bother to announce the event while staying secretive with the details. With 6 games already in constant upkeep at the studio, could a 7th be in the works already?
Tom attained his position at the company in 2010 after serving as a senior game designer for years following his lengthy work on Ultima Online. With 4 expansions under his belt, he's left the captain's chair in the hands of Ion Hazzikostas - a designer who's risen to the rank almost as quickly as Tom did himself.
Could Blizzard be working on another new IP, or are we likely looking at an expansion for a current title?
