Little Nightmares, an upcoming title from Bandai Namco and Tarsier Studios, is all about dealing with your childhood fears. That is, if your childhood fears happen to encompass the very specific combination of being trapped undersea, tiny amid a world for giants, and constantly running to escape hungry, monstrous pursuers. Odds are you were scared of at least one of those things as a kid.
You play as Six, a raincoat-clad girl trapped inside a mysterious, gaping vessel called the Maw. The dollhouse-like world is oversized for Six’s tiny frame, and you’ll constantly be on the run from the Maw’s bloated, horrible inhabitants as you look to find a way back home, working your way from the bottom of the Hull to the ultimate Above.
Tarsier Studios is known for their contract work on LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway franchises with Sony and Media Molecule, which certainly explains the gorgeous papercraft aesthetic here in Little Nightmares. The gameplay in the trailer above seems to have a heavy influence from games like Limbo and Inside, and there are certainly inspirations to draw from.
Little Nightmares will release in 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, and Steam.
