I haven’t played a Telltale series since Wolf Among Us, but it’s not for lack of interest. Sure, we’ll probably never hit the heights of Walking Dead season one again, but I’m always up for solid interactive storytelling, which by all accounts they’re still providing. And they’ve got Batman now! And they let some details out about it!
At the SXSW Gaming Expo with assistance from Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller, Telltale unleashed the info on their version of the Dark Knight. They’re planning on an M rating, and won’t be directly based on any specific version of the character. The story will focus on the Batman himself rather than the supporting cast, so if Robin, Nightwing, et cetera show up it’ll be in a supplementary rather than starring role. You can expect franchise staples like Alfred,, Vicki Vale, James Gordon, and Renee Montoya to show up, however.
Beyond that, most of their description made it sound like a Telltale Game. You’ll split the difference between playing as Batman or Bruce Wayne, and the actions you take will affect Bruce’s situation in the daytime as well as the criminals Batman battles at night. Certain events will require to decide whether to investigate them as Bats or Bruce, and of course different outcomes will result from that choice. They didn’t release any images of the visuals, but they said they were committed to a ”non-photorealistic interpretation” that would take “inspiration from the works of over 75 years of artists such as Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, and Neal Adams,” which is very much in line with Telltale’s house style.
I know a lot of folks have cooled on Telltale, and while I’ll admittedly wait until the full season is out before jumping in, I’m still curious what they plan to do with the Dark Knight. (Just please not another Joker story.) The first episode is due to premier this Summer.
