HTC announced yesterday at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona that its Vive virtual reality tech - powered by Steam VR - will launch in early April for $799, with pre-orders opening on 29th February.
What comes with the $799 package? Two wireless controllers, a headset, 360 degree tracking and room scale movement sensors. HTC are calling this package the consumer edition, which also integrates phone functionality, allowing you to answer any calls without exiting the virtual world.
“With the Vive consumer edition we are now able to realize our ultimate vision; bringing Vive into homes around the globe so that people can experience immersive virtual reality in a away that fires the imagination and truly changes the world,” said Cher Wang, chairwoman and CEO of HTC.
The consumer edition comes with two VR experiences, Job Simulator and Fantastic Contraption, but only for a limited time.
$799. This is the birth of VR, so you could say it’s an early adopters price, although it’s unclear at the moment how long it’ll take for the price to come down. What do you make of the price? Is it too high or are you going to get it on day one? Let us know.
