During a Polygon podcast, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford revealed some interesting facts about their upcoming team shooter Battleborn, which will be a full priced game with 25 heroes from 5 factions to pick from.
Battleborn is by far the studio’s biggest investment in its history. Pitchford stated that more resources have gone into the game than Borderlands 1 and 2 combined. Of the 300 staff at Gearbox, roughly 80% of them have been allocated to work on the shooter.
The game, which had the codename “Poplar” during development, started out of a desire that Pitchford had in which he could be a Jedi Knight fighting alongside Master Chief and Gandalf. The entire game is to have players experiencing wild combinations of character types fighting together in frenetic battles. It will have a ”big, robust campaign”, but Gearbox is stressing the game’s PvP.
What are the other 20% of Gearbox working on? Pitchford stated that there’s some games in the pre-production stage, one of which is a new Brothers In Arms game, and its not the canceled Furious 4 title. He also stated that the Borderlands franchise is still alive, but they haven’t figured out whether to do more of the same or to go in a new direction with it.
Battleborn is due to be released on the 3rd May, 2016.
