The reveal of a brand-new Quake game was one of the bigger surprises at E3, but questions around its esports focus and unique character abilities have prevented the revelation from being a slam dunk for fans of the series. While we won’t know if the game holds up to the originals for a little while yet, we do at least now know a bit about how its characters will play.
Studio director Tim Willits promises that Champions will capture the feeling that fans know and love from Quake, and offered some details on what abilities the individual characters would have. Ranger is the main character from the original Quake, and his special ability is the Dire Orb used to kill the original main boss.
I don’t have a good segue here, but don’t let that stop you from checking out the best Hearts of Iron IV mods!
Visor returns from Quake III, with a piercing sight ability that allows him to see through walls. Newcomer Nyx is a speedy champion with the ability to phase in and out of physical existence, and fellow fresh addition Scalebearer can soak up the damage and bull rush his opponents.
It sounds like each character will only have a single ability, which may allay concerns about their effects on the game’s balance. We’re expecting to hear more about Quake Champions at Quakecon, which will run August 4-7. Hopefully we’ll get the chance to see the game in motion.
