With Zenimax Media on the re-release and reboot spree evident from their work on DOOM and the Wolfenstein, their next stab is bringing Quake back into the spotlight. And it all starts with Quake Champions.

Announced at E3 this year, we're creeping up to the point where Quake Champions is ready to take on the world - but it needs players; naturally. That means Beta - and it's happening soon.
id Software's Studio Director Talks Unique Characters In Quake Champions
According to a new Russian interview with, the game's executive director Tim Wilits confirmed that beta will kick off "in the next few weeks" with it starting small and snowballing as the servers are tested and balance tweaks are made to entice the eSports hopefuls and reassure that every effort is being made to make it a fair playing field.
The 'Duel' gametype is something they're very excited to bring to the eSports scene being a 1v1 matchup that will shine a bigger spotlight on a smaller set of players. Sacrifice is another, but we'll have to wait to hear more on that one.
In terms of playability, while Quake Champions will technically be a free game with unlockable 'champions' that function more like characters from a team-based shooter like Overwatch or Paladins, the general feel of Quake should still be there. Anyone willing to pay for the full experience is welcome to do-so with all champions being unlocked from that point on.
