How do you locate the Necromancy of Thay in Baldur’s Gate 3? BG3 has so many places to explore and so many secrets to discover that one playthrough is rarely enough. But, if you only have time to play it once, you’ll want to pick up the Necromancy of Thay.
The Necromancy of Thay can first be picked up in Act 1 during the Search the Cellar Quest, but its true potential is only revealed much later in Act 3. Even so, you can definitely still benefit from it early on, and this guide will show you how.
Baldur's Gate 3 Necromancy of Thay Location
The first step in acquiring the Necromancy of Thay is to find Ilyn Toth’s Lair in the Whispering Depths, located underneath the Blighted Village (X:37; Y: 379). This path requires you to find the secret entrance and solve a conversation puzzle, which you can do yourself or follow our guide to the Ornate Mirror.
Once inside Ilyn Toth’s Lair, loot what you’d like and then proceed to the gated door to the east. A skill check is required to reveal a pressure plate on the floor that you should disarm if you want to avoid damage.
The gate can be unlocked with a Rusty Key that you should have found in the original laboratory, but can also be picklocked fairly easily if necessary. Inside the cage is a table containing the book Necromancy of Thay, but take a step back first.
Picking up the book in the first place will trigger the gargoyle traps so you’ll want to either disarm both of these, or make sure whatever character you use to pick up the book can handle the heat. Another option would be to use Mage Hand to bring the book to you safely.
You’ll want to use the book with either your main, or a companion with high Wisdom. Gale is a perfect choice for this thanks to his proficiencies, but these only come into play once you manage to open the book, for which you’ll need the Dark Amethyst.
