As with any other RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3 will task you with loads of quests you need to complete in order to progress through the story and earn rewards. While some are as straightforward as rescuing a druid from a Goblin Camp, the Punish the Wicked quest, in particular, requires you to avenge murder victims by searching for a ledger in an unfamiliar area.
No matter how lucky your Perception checks are, completing this quest can take a while if you’re unsure where to look. Plus, there’s a way to dodge the boss, too, and we’re here to help you with that. All you need to do is follow this Baldur’s Gate 3 Punish the Wicked quest walkthrough.
How to Complete the Punish the Wicked Quest in BG3
To start off, you need to head to the east of the Shadow-Cursed Lands, just east of Last Light Inn, to find a mysterious NPC named He Who Was. He can be seen to be in the middle of a ritual as you approach him.
He Who Was claims that he wants to avenge the victims of a murderer by punishing the killer, the woman lying before him. You can choose to fight him on the spot if you do not trust him. Meanwhile, if you decide to help him, he’ll ask you to look for a ledger, an item required to summon the murderer’s spirit into his body.
The ledger can be found inside the Waning Moon, a tavern near the Moonrise Towers on the western side of Reithwin Town. As for the specific location, keep your eyes peeled underneath the floorboard behind the bar in Waning Moon.
One thing you should keep in mind is that you’ll need to defeat Thisobald Thorn to access this floorboard area behind the bar. If you’re feeling bold, you can fight and try to kill him right there, but those who want to complete this quest as quickly as possible can choose to out-drink him until he bursts out from drinking too much.
You just need to consistently pass your checks when telling him stories while drinking to pull this off.
With the ledger in your hands, you can return to He Who Was, who will proceed with the ritual. During the ritual, you’ll see that the murderer, Madeline, takes over his consciousness and tells you her side of the story.
You’ll learn that she’s innocent all along and didn’t mean for the tragedy to happen. The game will then allow you to choose one of these three options:
- Believe her, but you'll end up fighting He Who Was and his white raven
- Not believe her, leaving her tortured for eternity
- Convince her to stab herself for the victims she killed, which will kill He Who Was in the process
Whichever option you choose, you’ll be able to complete the Punish the Wicked Quest in BG3 and obtain 29 gold and Raven Gloves as a reward.
