There are a number of movies not available through Netflix on the Xbox 360 and NXE users have noticed an interesting connection, they’re all tied to Sony.
Big boys like Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer etc all have their films ”temporarily unavailable”, they all just so happen to be Sony’s subsidiaries.
”Today, titles regularly come in and out of license and there is a natural ebb and flow to what we have on license at any given point in time. In the case of Xbox 360, a few hundred titles are temporarily unavailable to be streamed via the Xbox game console,” explained Netflix’s Director of Corporate Communications, Steve Swasey.
Of course that’s inoffensive PR talk for ‘yeah, Sony have the ache over this’. This can be further confirmed by that fact that the same blocked movies are still available on TVs and other devices as is evidenced by this additional Netflix statement:
”Those titles are still available to be watched on subscribers’ computers and on TVs via other partner devices, and we hope they’ll be licensed for Xbox 360 shortly.”
It certainly wouldn’t shock many to learn a corporation is using its subsidiaries in a small corporate war by proxy. Still, 360 gamers are probably too busy fussing over their avatars fashion accessories and hair style for the time being to care.
Perhaps Sony headquarters will suddenly find themselves in possession of illegal copies of a certain operating system and office software as little strings of alpha-numeric sequences become ‘temporarily blocked’?
