Developer CCP has revealed more on their upcoming online console FPS title, DUST 514. It takes places in a persistent state; it’s an MMO but not an EVE expansion.
It has real-time strategy elements to the game, and links in with EVE Online with players from the space opera able to fund DUST troopers, who impact the faction warfare system.
Gamers will be able to buy customisable vehicles and weapons for their DUST soldiers, and deploy buildings during planetary combat. The battles will play in similar style to Battlefield games by adopting its Commander system and RTS flavours.
DUST 514 and EVE Online will have integral links, with each able to interact with the other. ”The two worlds will affect each other in a meaningful way,” said CCP boss Hilmar Petursson, in an interview with German site Gamona.
DUST troops act as mercenaries who can be contacted by EVE Online players to land contracts, like raiding a particular world and securing it for a faction. The battles from both MMO games will contribute toward the NPC war going on in the EVE Universe.
”You can still have great fun without thinking about the strategic connections between these two games… but everything has this additional meaning or relevance… for thousands or tens of thousands of other players,” continued Petursson.
DUST 514 is a way to get gamers who have really taken a shine to the EVE lore, but were put off by the day-to-day of EVE Online, into the expansive universe.
”There are a lot of stories that come out of EVE, and there’s a lot of interest in the social, political and economic things that go on in it. But the EVE experience is focused on a particular play style, and there are people that want to play different types of games,” he explained.
”So we thought, OK, what is the most different type of game from what we have now? And a first-person shooter was our conclusion.” CCP are not yet ready to commit to a release date for the console exclusive DUST 514, ”But we have been working on it for three years, so we’re quite far along already,” added the boss.
CCP Fanfest starts October 1st and runs until the 3rd, which means more on DUST 514 is likely to be spilled for EVE fans. There is absolutely no mention of a PC version.
