Citing ”people familiar” with the matter, the Wall Street Journal says Microsoft will be rolling out a motion-sensing camera for their next-gen console.
It’ll give ”more accurate control” over games than previous similar technology has achieved, it would sit near the TV much like the Wii sensor bar and EyeToy. Could see an E3 showcasing.
They’re developing ”a new videocamera for the Xbox 360 console that will allow players to control games with the movement of their bodies, people familiar with the matter said,” reports the Wall Street Journal article.
”Unlike the Wii, the Microsoft camera won’t require users to hold any hardware to control on-screen action, the people familiar with the matter said. The camera would sit near the television and capture when players move their hands, legs or head.”
It is believed that Microsoft developed the technology behind the camera themselves, with the recently acquired Israeli 3DV Systems Ltd as a possible source, as they hold patents to a 3-D camera ”according to a person familiar with the matter.”
It’s been rumoured for a long time that Microsoft has some motion related ace up their sleeve, perhaps we can get a glimpse next month at E3?
Interestingly, 3DV’s Zvika Klier responded that ”unfortunately I can’t comment on the rumors surrounding this deal. …We will provide more information when we can.” Microsoft however has flat out refused to comment on the issue at all.
