Bethesda has revealed that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will have a new engine, eschewing the old Gamebryo engine that came under criticism for characters that delved into the uncanny valley.
This was revealed in a tweet by Bethesda Softworks community manager Nick Breckon:
We can now confirm that the TES V: Skyrim engine is all-new. And it looks fantastic.
Since ZeniMax, Bethesda’s parent company, acquired id Software, the rumor is that it’ll use the id Tech 5 engine, which is powering DOOM 4 and Rage.
