They weren’t designed just to ”go out with a bang,” said Bungie’s Derek Carroll. The team remain quiet on ‘Invasion’, but tease vehicle warfare.
The four modes detailed in the recent wave of Bungie’s online blabber mouthing are Headhunter, Stockpile, Generator Defense and Invasion. Each of these new types will be included in the multiplayer beta program.
”I don’t think we went crazy on purpose to go out with a bang, although we certainly are,” multiplayer designer Carroll reports 1UP. ”We just said, ‘okay, Slayer, CTF, King of the Hill, those are great, let’s lock those up and put them aside. Now what else? What can we have?’ And then came up with some fun stuff to do in the space.”
Headhunter - this is ”a new ‘party’ game where the goal is to collect and capture the most skulls.” As you kill opponents you’ll be able to pick up skulls and then drop them off at a designated drop site that moves around the map. You can carry multiple at once but should you die then you lose all of them so it’s best to score them.
Stockpile - is ”another ‘party’ gametype that is sort of like Territories meets with Capture the Flag,” explains the studio. Two teams race against one another to collect four neutral flags that spawn around the map, and take them back to their base.
Generator Defense - ”pits three Spartans against three Elites. The Elites are trying to destroy three generators before time runs out while the Spartans are trying to defend.”
Elites may enjoy more health and speed but ”Spartans have the advantage of being in a pretty well defended position.” This mode plays as ”two rounds of five minutes apiece,” with the teams switching over to experience both perspectives.
Invasion - is ”a vehicle-full frenzy,” tease Bungie. The team are remaining quiet on this new multiplayer match mode, with it featuring the only map in the beta sessions with any vehicles available to hop in. It’s ”packed to the gills with vehicle combat,” says Carroll.
In a few weeks time the multiplayer beta begins for Halo: Reach - are you excited?
