PCs ”get better every year” while the consoles ”stay the same.” Simple. This gives back the edge to PC again, at least ”for a little while.”
”You’ll get a generation of consoles that will come out that will make PCs look expensive, for a while – but PCs get better every year. Consoles stay the same,” creative director Simpson told VideoGamer.com, after their BAFTA win for Empire: Total War.
”The current consoles are starting to fall behind and it’ll be a long time before the next generation comes out. It’s time for the PC to dominate again, for a little while.” Microsoft may suspect things are slipping back a little, after all Fable III is rumoured for PC too.
”I think that we are definitely showing that there are things you can do with the PC that you cannot do with any of the other formats. They give you … a game which is at such a scale, consoles just can’t handle it,” he went on.
This was the same thinking for fellow Creative Assembly-ite James Russell, lead designer for Empire: Total War, that game that won a BAFTA - did I mention that?
”I think it’s a cycle,” said Russell. ”When the next generation of consoles comes along they have a phase of domination for a year or so, but then PC always overtakes and the cycle repeats itself.” Of course the PC needs some motion tech now to thwart consoles.
”I’m really pleased that BAFTA has given this award to an epic PC gaming experience. I think it’s a real vote of confidence in that form of gameplay, and we’re really proud.” Really? Empire: Total War won a BAFTA you say? I didn’t know.
Another PC veteran recently declared the PC was getting attention again. ”Gaming is being reborn on the PC,” said Peter Molyneux, creator of many PC classics. Do you feel that the cycle is at the right time again for PC gaming to strike back?
