Tony Hawk and Shaun White faced off with competing skateboarding titles in 2010, with Hawk edging White in sales despite low review scores.
Tony Hawk: Shred sold 300K units despite an average Metacritic score of 57, while Shaun White’s Skateboarding sold a meager 120K units worldwide, with average Metacritic scores around 70.
Part of the reason is that Shaun White is more recognizable as a snowboarder, while Tony Hawk is a legendary skateboarder.
However, Hawk could hardly be happy with sales of 300K worldwide. The previous Hawk game, Tony Hawk: Ride, which came with the infamous skateboard peripheral, sold 1.3M units, despite being declared a failure. Shred used the same peripheral.
