Echoing comments made by id Software’s John Carmack at E3, who said current PC gaming tech was “ten times as powerful” as current consoles, Rein argued that PC was
In an interview with Eurogamer TV, Rein stated, ”Don’t forget every game that’s ultimately built is built on a PC. PCs are always going to be the tools through which all games get made. With the PC you can simulate the future – you can put enough hardware in a PC to show you what a future console will look like.”
Regarding the Samaritan tech demo, ”It was kind of our love letter to hardware manufacturers. The next-gen, we expect, will look like that. If you fast forward a year or two years that should be a fairly common gamer’s spec.
“We hope the console manufactures look at that and go, jeez, if we aim for that in our next consoles we’ll be competitive with what you’ll be able to do on a PC in a year, year and half from now. A reasonably priced PC - obviously you can do it on an expensive PC already.”
Rein was stating the obvious - PC’s naturally can outpace console systems due to the very nature that computers are open systems while consoles are closed boxes, but as far as income, consoles have far outpaced the PC, which chiefly makes its money on the not-very-advanced casual gaming and social networking market, which don’t require bleeding edge graphics - in fact, just the opposite. They’re tailored for low-end PCs. It’s basically the reason that while a Veyron Bugatti outclasses a reasonably priced Chevy, you’ll see far more Chevy sales than premium sports car sales. So, while saying PCs have a far higher ceiling - which is always going up - in the end, it’s like Sony promoting 3DTVs: only a few people will appreciate it, like having Crysis 2 after the DX11 patch maxxed out on all settings. Then again, Rein was extolling the iPad in an Apple conference not long ago, so he probably enjoys playing to the crowd.
