US videogame retailer GameStop has cancelled pre-orders for Team Ico’s highly anticipated title The Last Guardian, chiefly because the retailer no longer has a firm release date for the title.
When gamers received an automated phone message from GameStop telling them their pre-orders for the game had been cancelled, the rumor immediately sprung that the game itself had been cancelled.
GameStop released a statement explaining that the rumor was not true, saying ”The Last Guardian has not been cancelled by Sony as we incorrectly stated in an automated call to reservation customers. Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system. The Last Guardian will be reinstated for pre-order when a firm launch date is known.”
The Last Guardian has had a rocky development since its initial unveiling at E3 2009, leading to delays and high-level personnel changes and defections. Team Ico is best known for the classic PlayStation 2 games Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
