As GameStop is ”developing a streaming service” of their own, the OnLive coupon is therefore a ”competitive service.” An internal memo ordered the return.
”As GameStop is developing a streaming service in our Spawn Labs Cloud Gaming Division, the coupon that was included is for a competitive service. We are returning all copies of the PC regular edition to the vendor in agreement with Square Enix,” read the memo.
Square Enix has since accepted the blame for the situation as their deal with OnLive wasn’t declared to the US retailer chain. At first employees were opening up PC copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and simply removing the coupons.
OnLive meanwhile is more than happy over the influx of new players they received thanks to the promotion they entered into. Only US PC copies include the free OnLive coupon. Deus Ex: Human Revolution releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC today in Europe.
A PC patch has also gone live which dramatically cuts down on load times.
