The rumor originated from French gaming site Gamekyo, who claimed that ”credible sources” had told them that Sega would be closing the Europe division to abandon console game development, and concentrate on digital distribution exclusively.
Jacobson mocked the rumor, tweeting, ”Interweb rumours of Sega Europe closing are false. Rumours of Dirk Kuyt signing for Fenerbache? Much more likely.”
The rumor had some credibility because Sega has been struggling lately, relying more and more on digital sales and less on retail products. Sega was even forced to withdraw from Gamescom.
Recently, Sega hailed its UK development studios, including Creative Assembly and Sports Interactive, as the “bedrock” of the company.
