While the goal might seem high, the response has been unanimous - Obsidian has raised $1M in a single day, leaving 31 days of funding to go.
The Kickstarter page describes the title as “an isometric, party-based RPG set in a new fantasy world”. To further pull the heartstrings of RPG gamers, Obsidian went on to state the game ”pays homage to the great Infinity Engine games of years past: Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment.”
Obsidian’s Chris Avellone states the game will have a tactical real-time with pause system. Players will create a character and attract companions to travel with them. As with many Obsidian games, the theme of making choices that affect the story later on in the narrative will be present. The developer promises ”deep conversations” and ”a story that explores mature themes and presents you with complex, difficult choices to shape how your story plays out.”
The Kickstarter rewards range from $25 for a digital download and a bonus in game item to a $65 which features a boxed copy, digital copy, digital soundtrack, digital manual and bonus item to some of the more extravagant and surprising popular rewards.
Obsidian apparently thought the $1.1M goal was a reach because they spent a section practically apologizing (”We are asking for more than a lot of the other Kickstarter projects and that’s because we are not only making a game, we are creating a whole new world….”), to the point at which no stretch goals have been announced. With already getting most of the funding after 1 day, it’ll be interesting to see what stretch goals they implement. The game is also significant in that this could be the first AAA title to be crowd-funded via Kickstarter. Recently, Planetary Annihilation reached a $2M stretch goal.
The developers state the game will be ready sometime in April 2014.
