The free-to-play game is being created by a Russian mod team OWL Game Studio, who openly admit that the game is unofficially based in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe.
The devs announced in a blog post, ”In anticipation of the new year, a team of WoS Team has pleased their fans a beta version of CryZone: Sector 23 on the engine CryEngine 2. Feedback have been different, but most of the players embraced the beta is positive, namely, the main aspect of the project - the atmosphere.
In addition, the beta version was introduced a lot of “easter eggs”, finding that it was possible to easily build a picture of how the project will evolve in the future.
What, then, it’s time to officially declare: CryZone is not a “modification for the game Crysis”. From now is a complete, self-Indie-game on engine CryEngine 3.”
Cryzone: Sector 23 tells the tale of a grief-stricken father who enters a mutant-infested wasteland called The Zone to find a legendary wish granter who can reunited him with his dead son.
