Five EVE Online players admitted they’d generated the money through Loyalty Points that are given based on the size of the ships destroyed and the cargo they carried. The bug allowed players to get credit for both the destroyed and surviving cargo, despite the fact surviving cargo could be recovered.
After CCP discovered the bug and repaired it, GoonWaffe went into full market manipulation mode by pushing up the value of the game’s least-purchased items, then blowing up ships full of that item to generate billions of Loyalty Points - and got over 5 trillion ISK, worth 10,000 30-day game time codes, or $175K USD.
CCP has not declared their actions an exploit yet, but they are investigating the matter.
