What many consider the very first real-time strategy game, Westwood’s Dune 2 is now free-to-play as a browser-based Javascript game.
Dune 2 was released back in 1992 as an MS-DOS game, and later ported to such machines as the Commodore Amiga and the Sega Genesis. It featured three unique sides, each with their own specialized units, with resource gathering and a simple tech tree.
