Why would Don Mattrick go from Microsoft as the Xbox One is being prepped for launch to a sinking ship like Zynga four days ago?
The answer: money, dear boy.
According to the SEC, Zynga has disclosed Mattricks compensation. Mattrick will get getting $1M per year in base compensatio, with a $5M signing bonus. Now, due to foregone stock, Zynga has extended a “make-whole grant” that totals $25M in stock, vesting over three years, with $22.6M of it split between the first two years.
Finally, Mattrick will also get $15M in stock, so in 2014, he’ll be eligible for a performance bonus of $2M to $4M in cash and $7M in stock.
Ka-ching! Even if Mattrick fails to turn Zynga around, he’ll still be swimming in dough.
