Barlog worked at Avalanche but according to CEO Christofer Sundberg, he wasn’t working on Mad Max while he was there. The project has gone through many iterations.
The Avalanche guys have been ”about 18 months” in production on the game. Barlog left the studio back in January 2012 to go work at Crystal Dynamics.
The God of War 2 director Barlog went and worked with George Miller, the creator of Mad Max, as a new game was said to be in the works all the way back in 2008. It was said to be a tie-in for an animated film, with Barlog blogging in October ‘08 that the project was wrapped up.
He then went and worked for Avalanche in 2010 and was rumoured to be attached to the Swedish studio’s own Mad Max project. He served as a consultant at the studio whilst still working with Miller. Meanwhile Mad Max: Fury Road was left languishing before being rebooted as live-action 3D film.
Avalanche Studios suddenly announced Mad Max was in the works officially at the developer, but that it isn’t anything related to Corey Barlog’s previous works. ”I don’t know what he worked on before he started working with us,” says Avalanche CEO Christofer Sundberg, ”but when we worked together he wasn’t on Mad Max.”
”We’ve been in production for about 18 months,” says Sundberg, ”but it’s been a process up until then. The game has gone through a series of iterations. We’ve been working for it for a couple years.” He added that their Mad Max wasn’t related to George Miller’s Fury Road, but their own tale in the universe separate from the films.
Mad Max releases Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4 and PC in 2014.
