Phil Spencer loves the crime-fighting series, and says that one shot of a green orb in a single slide for Xbox One’s dashboard ”wasn’t accidental. Definitely.” Ruffian Games is said to be too busy.
Of course the creator of the surprise hit is no more as Realtime Worlds collapsed shortly after their launch of the MMO APB, which has since been taken over.
”Oh… Crackdown is one of my favourite games, and not just because it’s a Microsoft first-party game,” said Phil Spencer. ”I have a lot of love for that franchise. The homage to Crackdown in the reveal screenshots was… I know there was some, like, ‘Did we accidentally sneak that…?’ It wasn’t accidental. Definitely.” The orb was spotted by NeoGAF.
He’s certainly not counting out the franchise: ”No, I don’t think Crackdown is dead at all. It’s a franchise that’s still close to me,” he continued. ”For me, the natural progression for a game like Crackdown - and you see this showing up on our stage - is in these living, open worlds that live in the cloud.”
Ruffian developed the sequel Crackdown 2, but is working on Tribal Towers and said back in February they don’t have any Crackdown project in the pipeline. If it is being worked on then who’d Microsoft hand it to?
