It’s time for a good dose of cliché teen horror, and indie developer James Matthew Wea has announced Last Year in which 5 players take the role of archetypal high school teens in a deadly game against a player-controlled killer.
Classic horror movie backdrops are ours to sweat fear through as we try to accomplish objectives while being stalked by one of five different types of killer. Last Year is on Kickstarter for $50,000 CAD.
”In Last Year you’ll experience the nightmare together as you and 5 friends struggle to survive against one player that’s playing as the Killer. Explore familiar territory based on classic horror movie locations including Camp Silver Lake and East Side High. You’ll play the roles of 5 stereotypical high school characters while co-operating to complete objectives and survive,” blurbs the Kickstarter.
It’s a 5 vs. 1 multiplayer game for PC in first-person and due out sometime in Fall 2016.
”When playing as the Killer you’ll utilize game-changing Predator mechanics to help you hunt down and eliminate your victims before they have a chance to escape. Players will sneak and slash their way through a suspenseful atmosphere that keeps them on the edge of their seat as they compete to be the top Killer or best Survivors.”
Escaping the various scenes requires a truck to be fuelled and, naturally, for you to have the keys. The killer meanwhile just needs to pick off each of the survivors until there’s none left. Do you split up and get more done quietly, or stay together as a group?
Each of the teens has special skills. Should one of them die then the survivors can call the police, at which point a dead player can comeback as police officer on the scene.
There’s scout, assault, technicians, medic and support roles. Survivors can outrun the killer, but the killer has some rather nasty tricks up their sleeve like being able to despawn and respawn in perfect ambushes spots like a janitor closet. Check out the Last Year Kickstarter campaign for more.
