The game with the most boring title in the world has changed its name at last; Bugbear’s online racer Next Car Game, currently in early access, is now officially known as Wreckfest.
Coinciding with the name change is the release of update Build #6, which adds 18-player multiplayer and new deathmatch modes.
As you might imagine, Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes are far more concerned with living up to that new title than they are with traditional racing. Once your car is reduced to little more than a crumpled metal ball, you can jump back into the fray with a new vehicle. Eventually Bugbear wants to add 24-player battles, but that might take a while.
“We’re pushing the limits to get the number of simultaneous players to 24,” the team explains, ”but optimizing the network code will take a bit longer. Because the code is not yet optimized, remember that the speed of your ISP has a tremendous impact on how the races will run. Check the Recommended Upstream figure when you host a game, and you’ll be fine.”
As well as a new oval Speedway map there’s a few different convenience features in Build #6, including an improved field of vision and the addition of a reversing camera so you can even cause pile-ups while backing up. You can find the full patch notes here.
