This might sound like blasphemy to fans of the original game, but creator Tim Schafer’s thinking big when it comes to a possible Grim Fandango sequel. He’d like to make it an open world game.
Talking to Kotaku at Double Fine’s ‘Day of the Devs’ event, Schafer revealed; “I’ve had this urge to make a fully 3D version of El Marrow, where it’s more like an open world game.”
“You’re running around the city and stuff. Games like Grand Theft Auto have a lot of the elements of adventure games, and if there was just an inventory that wasn’t guns, you could probably do a full adventure game in one. That’s something I’ve thought about since the ’90s.””
Just to clarify, this is all just theoretical brain-storming. Grim Fandango 2 isn’t even at the ‘ideas scrawled on the back of a beermat’ stage of development right now, as far as we know. Still, the open world concept is an intriguing one. A larger, less linear adventure game environment is something that Dreamfall Chapters is currently utilising to great effect.
Schafer did admit that any sequel to Grim Fandango would be a hard sell story-wise, due to its quite definitive ending (without giving too much away). Luckily we do have the remastered version to look forward to. It’s coming out on PC and consoles, probably some time next year. You can check out some early footage in the video above.
